So I was determined to make Carson and Emmalyn stockings this year. I just thought it would be so fun, and a keepsake they could have growing up. Little did I know how much time they would take. However half of that time was spent picking things out. I’m definitely no pro at sewing… but I finished and I really love how they turned out! They also look pretty good from far away! lol.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your very own stockings:
- Stocking (To trace for pattern, or print one online)
- 1/2 yard stocking fabric
- 1/2 yard lining (muslim or cheap white fabric)
- White warm and natural cotton batting
- ribbon or extra scraps to use as hanger
- Basic sewing supplies
The first thing I did was find a stocking to trace. I traced it onto wrapping paper and used that as my pattern. Then I measured the cuffs circumference, width and height and made a pattern from those measurements.
I first traced the pattern over the lining fabric. I added about 1/4 in around the entire stocking to give me room for sewing. Then I took the lining pattern and traced it onto the red fabric and the batting.
For the stocking you will end up with 2 cotton pieces, 2 lining pieces and2 red pieces. Then for the cuff you will end up with 1 cotton piece and one piece of fabric that you are using for the outside.
Then you will sew the cotton and lining together with a 1/4 in seam.
Then sew the lining to the red pieces. You will want to make sure the cotton is touching the wrong side of the red fabric. The right side should be touching the table, and the lining should be facing you. Make sense.. or am I totally confusing? Just let me know if I am. :)
Then you will sew the 2 pieces RIGHT sides together with a 1/4 in seam. Make sure to go slow around the curves, and don’t sew the top of the stocking. Am I the only one that stinks at sewing curves? Straight lines I can handle. Curves… not so much!
Here we are sewing away. It was during my sons nap, and I had my baby girl sewing right beside me! She looks so cute!
So anyways…Now that your stocking is assembled you’re going to make the cuff.. Sorry I forgot to take a picture of this part, but you will sew the 2 pieces with the right sides together (wrong sides facing out). Make sure to leave one end open so you can pull it right side out.
Then before you sew it to the stocking add some ric rac, ribbon, or any type of embellishment. For my son’s I just left it plain, but for my girls I wanted it a little more frilly!
Then you will pin the cuff all around the stocking with the RIGHT side of the cuff facing the WRONG side of the stocking.
Then pin down the side of the cuff as well.
Before I sewed I tucked in a 6 in piece of ric rac to be used as the stocking hanger.
Then you will sew along the top and edge. When sewing the edge be careful not to sew it to the stocking. Then trim any extra fabric so it’s not to bulky.
Then you’ll flip the cuff out and admire your hard work! I’m loving the lacy fabric against the red ric-rac and ruffles!
So what do you think? Not to shabby for my first set of stockings.
Here they are hung up on my mantel. ;)
